After the success of the Practical Series katana and the apparent need in the Japanese sword market for more affordable and accessible katana, CAS set about designing a wider range of katana that would appeal to a large audience, and in this case, a larger practitioner. The Practical Pro Katana was built for those who needed a little more leverage and reach. Featuring not only a longer 29 ½” blade that was differentially tempered, the Practical Pro Katana added a longer tsuka (handle) that was leather wrapped which differentiated it from its predecessors.
Keeping with the theme of elegant simplicity, the round Kuruma tsuba represents the “Wheel of Dharma”which is found in the Buddhist concept of the Noble Eightfold Path. The fuchi and karshia are plain but maintain the overall tone of the sword. The Practical Pro embodies true meekness with the restrained power of this cutting katana.
Though the accoutrements are subtle, the hamon of the blade is more prominent than its predecessors. The golden menuki contrast brightly against the white same (rayskin) and black tsuka-ito. The saya is finished in a deep black lacquer with a black cotton sageo.
